This is an ambitious and incredibly scenic route across the heart of Sumatra. You’ll be transitioning from the coastal roads of the west to the rugged Gayo highlands, and finally into the rainforests and volcanic lakes of the interior.Here is your detailed 9-day tour schedule:

Day 1: Banda Aceh – Meulaboh

Morning:Depart Banda Aceh via the Calang-Meulaboh coastal road. This is one of the most beautiful drives in Indonesia, featuring dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters. Afternoon:Stop at Lhok Nga or Puncak Geurutee for coffee with a view of the Indian Ocean. 

Evening:Arrive in Meulaboh. Visit the Baitul Hikmah Grand Mosque and enjoy fresh grilled fish by the shore.

Day 2: Meulaboh – Takengon Morning:Leave the coast and head inland towards the Gayo Highlands. The road begins to wind upward through dense forests.

Afternoon:Pass through Beutong Ateuh, a lush valley with cool air and panoramic mountain views. Evening:Arrive in Takengon, the town on the shores of Lake Laut Tawa. The temperature will drop significantly here—bring a jacket!

Day 3: Takengon Exploration

Morning:Sunrise at Pantan Terong for a bird’s-eye view of the entire lake and town.Mid-Day: Visit a Gayo Coffee Plantation. Learn about the “wet-hulled” process and sample world-class Arabica.  Afternoon: Drive around Lake Laut Tawar. Stop at the Puteri Pukes Cave (a site of local legend) and enjoy a lakeside lunch of *Depik* (small endemic fish).

Day 4: Takengon – Ketambe Morning: A long but scenic drive through the Gayo Lues regency. You’ll pass through Blangkejeren, known for its pine forests.Afternoon:Descend into the Alas Valley. The scenery shifts from coffee hills to tropical rainforest as you approach the Leuser ecosystem. Evening:Arrive in Ketambe and check into a riverside guesthouse. Fall asleep to the sound of the Alas River.

Day 5: Jungle Trekking in Ketambe Full Day: Enter the Gunung Leuser National Park. Unlike more touristy spots, Ketambe offers a truly wild experience.Highlights: Search for Wild Orangutans, Thomas Leaf Monkeys, and Gibbons.Soak in a Natural Hot Spring** hidden deep in the jungle. Picnic lunch by the river prepared by your local guide.Evening:Return to the guesthouse for a well-earned rest.

Day 6: Ketambe – Berastagi

Morning:Depart the rainforest for the Karo Highlands.Afternoon:Arrive in Berastagi. Visit the Lumbini Natural Park (a stunning golden pagoda) and the vibrant Fruit Market for local passionfruit and avocados.Evening:Relax in the cool mountain air. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the local Babi Panggang Karo (BPK) for dinner.

Day 7: Berastagi – Parapat – Samosir Island Morning:Stop at the Sipiso-piso Waterfall, which plunges 120m into Lake Toba.Afternoon: Drive to Parapat, the gateway to the lake. Take the ferry across Lake Toba to Tuktuk on Samosir Island.  Evening:Relax at a lakeside hotel and enjoy the peaceful Batak atmosphere.

Day 8: Explore Samosir Island Morning:Visit Tomok Village to see the ancient tombs of Batak Kings and Ambarita to see the stone chairs used for tribal councils.Afternoon:Rent a scooter or hire a car to drive up to the Simanindo Museum for a traditional Batak dance performance.Evening: Dinner by the lake. Try the local “Lake Toba Pizza” or fresh tilapia.

Day 9: Samosir Island – Singkil

Morning Take the early ferry back to the mainland. 

Full Day: 

Begin the long journey south/west toward Singkil. You will pass through the Sidikalang region (famous for its robust coffee). 

Evening: 

Arrive in Singkil. This is usually the jumping-off point for those heading to the Banyak Islands for surfing or snorkeling the next morning.Important Travel Tips 

Road Conditions: 

Roads in Aceh and North Sumatra can be winding and occasionally narrow. Expect travel times of 6–8 hours for the longer legs.

Cash is King:

While ATMs are available in towns like Takengon and Berastagi, carry enough cash for Ketambe and Samosir.

Clothing:

You are moving between hot coastal areas and cold mountains. Layering is essential. Remember to dress modestly when in Aceh.
